Where are you from ? How did you come to drone?
I am from Lille! Yes a Ch'ti pilot! I started flying on real planes when I was a high school student before I even drove. Everything related to aeronautics and new technologies has always fascinated me. But I started a career more classical in computing, developing in parallel another passion for photography and video. For several years I have experimented several fields of photography, urban, nocturnal, travel, portrait, strobist, ... and one day I left everything to go traveling. I dreamed then to pack one of those little drones that were starting to become seriously reliable, but the clutter and weight constraints on a planned trip of nearly two years was not compatible with my project.
After 20 months on the roads of the world, I cracked, dropped some of my stuff and added a P3 Pro in my already loaded bag and ended my adventure in South America by filming the end of my trip to Patagonia, Uruguay and Brazil!
All pilots do not have the chance to make their first flight to Ushuaia! I think this picture taken at the end of my very first flight reflects my enthusiasm to want to catch the air as soon as possible!
Do you have a background in audiovisual creation ?
As mentioned above, I have a past in photography. But I've been force-fed in the "behind the scenes" since I was little, and pure technique has little secrets for me. I have experimented with my scale for years and now every production, with more or less large teams, is a new opportunity to continue my apprenticeship.
For you, a drone is ...?
My drone is an extension of myself. More than a tool, as soon as it is running I project myself and I have the feeling of being on board in flight, making the plans from the angles that interest me. When they hurt themselves, I hurt with them! My machines are pampered so that incidents happen as seldom as possible!
Do you shoot aerial shots from planes or helicopters ? With what vectors and since when ?
Very young, at the command of my Robin DR400 from Lesquin airport I already realized aerial shots. The digital had just arrived on the market, at the time the must was a photo in 640x480! I do not even talk about video ....
Do you consider yourself today as a passionate "stock-shooter"?
Absolutely! And I think I always had the "stock" attitude in my veins! At the time of film I reported 30 dandruff of my stays, going digital I started to take so many images that classifying and indexing my images took longer than the stay I came from! Since filming with my drones, each flight is a privilege I enjoy and for which I try as much as possible to bring back exceptional images to put on the HOsiHO image bank. Not only my "stock" becomes visible to the greatest number, but in addition it allows me by sales to continue to pursue this passion!
Tell us how you organize a day of shooting for HOsiHO ?
As for a photo output, an exit for aerial shooting just requires a little more organization and especially anticipation! Before taking off, I like to spot the place and its surroundings. For example, for the filming of the Cathedral of Reims, I had spotted the city center on the 3D version of the city on Google Maps. It is a fabulous preparation tool, unfortunately not yet available in all cities. Once a few areas of flights spotted, I submitted them to contacts on site in Reims (I organized Lille this shoot) to have their opinion on the spots and especially to know if these spots really were practicable (Maps is not not always up to date). Once the zones are validated, I declare in the prefecture the zones and take care of contacting the necessary instances for my shooting. Finally, a passage on Instagram with the keywords #Reims and #Cathedrale give me a recent glimpse of what awaits me. It remains to follow the weather until D-day! Here is my recipe to realize, when the timing is flexible, beautiful images of our heritage!
How did you get the idea of creating images for stock ? Do you think this is a lucrative business in the long run ?
I had in mind to build my image bank online for a while. Without having the time with the start of my activity, my stock continued to fill my hard drives and it is finally the coincidence evoked above (on the images of Etretats) which launched me to invest more in addition to this niche. In addition, not coming directly from the audio-visual environment at the base, this image bank allows me to prove that it is not mandatory to have finished first a film school in Los Angeles to know how to frame and report from beautiful pictures. If at the time I did not sell my plans Etretat, I in return began to strongly develop my network and my credibility!
Your online portfolio is impressive ! How long did it take to build it ?
First thanks for the compliment! My portfolio today consists mainly of images made with the equipment acquired (Inspire 2) following the launch of my activity, almost a year of flights across France and Switzerland. I will soon enrich my portfolio of images from my previous travels and whose quality / rarity / beauty will still be in line with the content referenced on HOsiHO.
What are your next shooting projects and trips ?
My shoot list is longer than my arm! Now that I can make flights in areas that were not allowed to me as an individual, the skies of the whole of France opens up to me and my machines and I can not wait to film more of our heritage ! Travel side, I would go back to South America with the Inspire 2, but it will probably be in Iceland that I will fly as soon as I have the opportunity! It is difficult to travel with such equipment and even harder to find countries where you can fly freely with a drone of almost 4kg nowadays!
A conclusion ?
Just a THANK YOU to you Sami! Thank you for your interest in my images since the first day, your advice, your confidence and for the time you invested for this image bank HOsiHO really exceptional, exciting and especially visible to the greatest number!
Thanks to you for your wonderful images and your infectious enthusiasm!
