Located in the west of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a southern European country with a population of 10.3 million. Its territory of 92,090 km2 extends in the west of Spain between Galicia and the Gulf of Cadiz. It also includes two archipelagos located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Azores and Madeira.
The capital of the Portuguese Republic is Lisbon. It has been a member of the European Union since 1986 and one of the founders of NATO. A leading European power in the 15th century, the country played a central role in the discovery of South America and the exploration of southern Africa.
A varied geography
A vast strip of land located at the western end of the European continent, Portugal is a country 560 km long and 160 km wide on average. The north of the country is crossed by the Serra da Estrela massif with a low relief but deep valleys. The southern part of the country located south of the Tagus river is composed of vast sedimentary valleys and low undulating plains.
Portugal has a Mediterranean-type climate. The country is crossed by four main rivers, the Minho, the Douro, the Tagus and the Guadiana, which originate in the neighbouring country of Spain. These rivers have an uneven profile and irregular flow.

Lisbon
From its famous Tower of Belem to its very popular Bairro Alto, Lisbon is a city of history with many facets. Built on a hillside at the mouth of the Tagus River, this historic city reflects the past opulence of Lusitania. Don't miss to take its famous streetcar n°28 and to taste succulent pastéis de nata.
The Algarve
This tourist region is located in the south of Portugal. It attracts vacationers in search of seaside and golf courses, but also lovers of wild nature and heritage. To discover the authentic Algarve, you just have to leave the main towns around Faro for the hinterland, such as the town of Monchiche, or for villages by the sea further east, such as Tavira.
Porto
World famous for its wines, Porto is the second largest city in the country. Built at the mouth of the Douro River, it stretches along the rugged edges of the surrounding hills. Its historic center, the Ribiera district, has regained its former splendor. It offers tourists a beautiful immersion in time, as well as very modern leisure activities such as trendy bars and trendy restaurants.
