Croatia is a country in Central and Southern Europe with a population of just over 4 million people. A former member of the Yugoslav federation, this parliamentary republic has a territory of 56,594 square kilometres.
The capital of the Republic of Croatia is the city of Zagreb. This member of the European Union is bordered to the west by the Adriatic Sea. It has common borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
Its particularly indented coast has 697 islands, 47 of which are inhabited, as well as numerous islets and reefs. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate, while the interior is subject to a continental climate.
A country in the shape of a horseshoe
The mainland Croatian territory has a horseshoe shape due to its 932 kilometer border with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The country has a diversified relief. Its coastline is cut into the rock along its entire length. The regions of Lika and Gorki Kotar are mountainous and belong to the Dinaric Alps, while the northern part consists of plains, hills and lakes, the best known of which are the Plitvice and Omladinsko jezero lakes.
The main rivers of the country are the Save and Drava rivers, two tributaries of the Danube, the Kupa river, which flows into the Save, and the Danube, whose bed crosses Croatia for 188 kilometers.
The main Croatian cities are Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and Zadar.
