Located in the North-East of the European continent, Poland is a Central European country covering an area of 312,000 km2. Now a democratic republic member of the European Union, this former Eastern Bloc country has a population of 38.2 million.
A country with a rich history, its capital is Warsaw. It shares its borders with Ukraine, Belarus, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Russia and Germany. It is bathed by an oceanic climate to the north and west, while its eastern and southern regions are subject to a continental regime.
A territory with a varied relief
Punctuated in the south by the Sudeten Mountains and the Carpathian Mountains, the Polish territory extends mainly over the plain of Northern Europe. It borders the Baltic Sea to the north, while its western border is formed by the beds of the rivers Oder and Nysa.
Southern Poland is a mountainous region. Bordering Slovakia, the Tatra Mountains contain the highest peak in the country and the Carpathians, the Rysy. Although rather flat, the land of the fields, as Poland is known, has 70 peaks that rise to more than 1000 meters above sea level.
The country is crossed by two main rivers, the Vistula and the Oder, which are irrigated by major rivers such as the Warta and the Bug. The Polish nation is also a land of lakes. Nearly ten thousand bodies of water with an area of more than one hectare punctuate the country as seen from the sky. One of them, the Morskie Oko, is ranked among the 5 most beautiful lakes in the world.
